College Park, MD – Tianna Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas each recorded a double-double as No. 9 Maryland opened its ACC slate with a 79-55 victory over Virginia on Thursday. Hawkins finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Thomas also had 20 points with 11 boards for the Terrapins (5-2, 1-0 ACC), who have won three of their last four. Tierney Pfirman poured in 17 points in the victory. Ataira Franklin paced the Cavaliers (5-3, 0-1) with 15 points and six rebounds. Jazmin Pitts and Sarah Imovbioh added 11 and 10 points, respectively, in Virginia's second straight setback. Maryland took advantage of a dreadful 5-for-26 (19. 2 percent) shooting performance by the Cavaliers over the opening 20 minutes to carry a 35-19 lead into the break. Virginia, however, was able to keep the score relatively close by making 9- of-12 free throws in the first half.
